OSWEGO, N.Y. – John Nicotra Racing driver Dave Shullick Jr. is having quite the 2017 campaign at Oswego Speedway in his first full season racing full-time in the non-wing Novelis Supermodified division.
After five nights of racing and six features including the Twin 35’s on June 10, Shullick has piloted the Royal Purple / G&I Homes / Riccelli Northern / Nicotra Racing No. 2 to three feature wins, including his most recent in the Independence Grand Prix 75 on July 1, and five top-three podium finishes which have him sitting atop Oswego’s Supermodified point standings by a 54.5-point margin over teammate Otto Sitterly.
On Saturday night, Shullick drove the Nicotra 2 to a hard-fought third-place finish in the 50-lap feature for his fifth top-three result of the year.
“I love races like last night; it was a real dog fight,” Shullick commented. “Our car was too tight to challenge for the win. Congrats to Mike Muldoon on the win, and thanks to Otto and the Nicotra Racing crew for preparing this awesome racecar. We’re having a great season. Also, we couldn’t do it without the support from Royal Purple, G&I Homes, Riccelli Northern, CORR/PAK and all the great sponsors of this effort. A big thanks goes out to them and the fans.”

Sitterly, who qualified fastest overall in the time trial session and passed six cars to win his 12-lap heat race, was involved in an incident on lap 25 of the feature when he spun while trying to make a pass in turn 1. Otto would bring his Nicotra No. 7 machine pitside for repairs and adjustments and returned to the track still on the lead lap. From there he began a strong march to the top five, passing several cars and setting the race’s fastest lap at a 16.914 to ultimately finish fifth.
Otto’s P5 result Saturday night gives him four top-five finishes so far this year which have him sitting second in points to Shullick.
DJ, Otto and the Nicotra stable will be back at it again this Saturday, July 15 at Oswego for the C’s Beverage Summer Championship 50-lapper for supermodifieds.
